The CLM’s primary focus is Jazz performance and history. Considered by many to be the first truly American art form, Jazz is integral to American history and culture. Under the Jazz Mentors umbrella, the CLM provides two programs: jazz-centric Industry Panel Discussions and Student Jam sessions. These programs focus on the history of Jazz, music performance, techniques and style and provide insights into today’s music business as well as information on alternate career choices in the music industry.Additionally, the CLM Jazz Mentors programs try to address various complex social justice issues and current socio-cultural topics that effect the artists and business professionals within the music industry. These discissions encourage open and honest dialogue in an environment of diversity and inclusion.
Collectively, our roster of diverse teaching artists has decades of experience teaching and coaching in the NYC public and private schools, colleges and music conservatories, festivals and summer programs. Legendary bassist Ron Carter, drummer/recording artist Bernard Perdie, Regina Carter, jazz violinist, recording artist Omar Hakim, Grammy winning Latin percussionist Bobby Sanabria and award-winning vocalist Jazzmeia Horn, have participated in panel discussions. Jazz at Lincoln Center saxophonist Camille Thurman and drummer Henry Conerway, III have mentored at the Student Jams. Industry experts include managers and publicists such as Gail Boyde and Michelle Taylor to help navigate the business side of the profession.
The CLM’s Jazz Mentors programs are free and open to the public, ensuring that all attendees, regardless of background, neighborhood, or economic status, have access to these informative and educational events as well as prepare the next generation of musicians to build careers in the music industry.
